How humans will evolve over time might surprise you.

What will our world look like in five hundred or a thousand years? More importantly, how will humans evolve?

There are many theories, however, we have made more progress in the last two decades than over the previous 200 years; there is no question that we will grow exponentially over the next 200 years. One can only imagine how we will evolve over the next 500-1000 years.

Exponential Growth in Technology

Technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), robots, synthetic biology, computing, 3 D printing, digital manufacturing and nano-materials will have a significant impact on humans.

Some scientists say that we humans will evolve into better, smarter and longer living species than we have ever been before. Hence, in the last century, the average human was able to live 20 years longer.

Peter Diamandis, Founder and Executive Chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation and co-author of Bold and Abundance; writes in his book “Bold”, that we have an opportunity to overcome world problems like poverty and water scarcity through entrepreneurship.

If he is right, which I am convinced of, humans will experience a dramatic change within the next 50-100 years, unlike any other generation has ever seen.

Never before have we experienced more business start-ups by young people like our millennial entrepreneurs. Those so-called “millennipreneurs” are outperforming there parents by a landslide. Just the fact that a 13-year-old can start a billion-dollar company in his or her garage should make Fortune 500 companies very nervous.

Google Co-founder Larry Page, as well as Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, have proven that before, so have many others too. Richard Foster, Yale University, says that the average lifespan of an S&P listed company will decrease from over 60 years to 15.

Crowdsourcing will produce the leaders of tomorrow.

People realize that a mission to help someone else makes all the difference as it is also the path to a fulfilled life. Millennial entrepreneurs have grasped that making money alone doesn’t create happiness. Hence, it’s the mission to make a difference that is rooted in a business plan will ultimately change everything. This is where crowdsourcing comes in to play.

For instance, the XPRIZE Foundation, whose goal is to solve the world’s most significant challenges is offering millions of dollars in prize money to the winning entrepreneur who develops such solutions. The competitions range from solving the global water crisis, ending poverty to finding a cure for Alzheimer’s.

These type of crowdsourcing competitions will produce hundreds of teams coming up with brilliant solutions that will ultimately solve many of the world problems, assuring a bright and sustainable future. There are many opportunities where entrepreneurs will make a difference in the world as well as making a fortune at the same time. However, it is yet to see if institutions and governments all over the world are ready for the change that is ahead of us through exponential technologies.

AI – Artificial intelligence

According to scientists we humans are still better than computers, not taking into consideration that IBM’s Watson computer who beat the two strongest contestants on Jeopardy as well as world chess champion Gary Kasparov. That still doesn’t make computers better than humans; however recent developments promise just that. Computer machines behind Siri, Google and, Netflix improve their performance over time, without human interaction.

Computer scientist Ray Kurzweil, inventor of the speech recognition technology and print to speech reading machine, just to mention a few, says that computers will outperform humans very soon. It was him who predicted that a computer would beat a world champion in chess in 1998, although it was even earlier in 1997.

Kurzweil predicts that computers will match the intelligence of a human by 2029. That said they will have the ability to have a conscious mind. In the mid-2030’s a part of our brain, the neocortex (this is where we think), will be connected to the cloud, which will make us all super smart.  By 2049, Kurzweil predicts, that computers will be a billion times faster than the human brain.

Exponential growth opportunities

Frits van Paasschen, author of “The Disruptors’ Feast,” explains that Digital technology, global growth, social process, and business interruption represent both a significant opportunity and a threat to the global economy.

Furthermore, he explains the danger of the exponential changes that will have a profound effect on people and organizations not ready for such a change. Yet, exponential growth opportunities offer excellent ways to make the world a better place.

There is no question that exponential technologies will have a great impact on how humans evolve. On the other hand, technologies such as artificial intelligence represent a significant danger to humans according to Tesla founder Elon Musk and Professor Stephen Hawking, especially when it comes to the military artificial arms race.

The million dollar question is: are we utilizing exponential technologies such as AI for useful purposes instead of military ones?. Once we can overcome these challenges, the future looks bright and prosperous.

What’s your opinion? How will humans evolve in the next 100 years? Do you have any solutions, ideas or inventions that will make life easier and more sustainable?
